Ecuador and Galapagos, EG 82

Jean makes friends with an iguana in Centennial Square, Guayaquil

At the Parque Historico in Guayaquil we got up close and personal with some beautiful macaws.

We pause in the shade of a bougainvillea, Roberto our Guayaquil city guide on the right hand side

We saw many albatross and even their recently laid chicks.

Gordon opens the special mail box which has been delivering mail from Galapagos since 1793. (no stamps required)

Jo reads the message from the EG 81 group to the EG 82 prior to posting our postcards the old fashioned way at Post Office Bay

We pause to photograph a heron at Punta Comorant, Espanola

Penelope, Ted and Helen study the masked boobies as Jo captures them on film.

Linda holds a tortoise egg in her hand.

Hard to believe something so small can end up so big.

Eileen alongside one of the Galapagos giants.

  • Charles, Jean, and Helen climb the volcano on Bartolome Island – this was made easier by the wooden walkway.

Charles at his namesake’s research centre

  • Graham with the big boys at the Darwin Research Station

Ted stands in the shade of a giant cactus

Deb, Graham and Linda on South Plazas Island

A frigate bird shows off its impressive gullet.

These colourful crabs were everywhere.

Rosemary checks out the marine iguanas on Española Island

A land iguana poses for a shot.

  • A blue footed booby and its chick on North Seymour Island

The sealions, poster child for the Galapagos were as cute as a button and particularly playful when we were in the water with them.

We celebrated Graham’s birthday on the final day of the cruise.

We enjoyed a beautiful city tour in colonial Cuenca

Jo, Eileen and Mayra ride the Devil’s Nose train

Gordon and Mary were invited to drive the train and as this photo shows a great day was had by all.

Some daring group members swung out over this waterfall, near Banos.

Our shuar guide painted Eileen’s face with a jaguar design

  • We all enjoyed the delicious Ecuadorian fruit. Helen shows off her purchase.

  • Eliceo (driver), Mayra (guide) and Jean enjoy some tatsy treats from a roadside stall.

We stopped in Salcedo to try their world famous (in Ecuador) ice cream.

  • Phil not only bought the t-shirt but also played with the band.

    Fruit market in Latacunga

The Ecuadorian kids were cute as a button.

We visited a hacienda which had been built over Inca ruins.

....and the patio soon filled with llamas; Mary feeds a llama.

We were fortunate to be in Ecuador during the build up to the referendum for a new constitution. Mayra and Rafael Correa (president) with the ‘Si’ smile which ultimately won on the day.

Helen, Ted and Jo enjoy the superb weather from the RukuPichincha cable car summit.

We enjoyed the hospitality and layout of our hotel in Otavalo

Linda stops to take a photo of the colourful mountain flowers by Lake Cuicocha.

Helen was able to share her impressive orchid knowledge at the Botanical Gardens

This was a very hands on tour. While visiting a marzipan ornament workshop an impromptu competition broke out to see who could create the best marzipan turtle. Penelope tries her technique here while the Ecuadorian professional looks on.

Here we are bang on the Equatorial Line.

Deb skillfully balances an egg on the nail – kids don’t try this at home, it only works at the Equator.

Colonial Quito is beautiful and was also the venue for our final dinner.

Rosemary, Penelope, Graham, Charles, Jean, Keith and Linda enjoy the colonial feel of Ecuador’s Capital.

While we all tried local dishes, Penelope went for gold with the roast guinea pig.
