Samoa

Classically Tropical

The Islands of Samoa are classically tropical, the air is balmy and the vegetation lush. Clear turquoise waters lap sparkling white beaches and tiny rocky coves and coconut palms fringe the coastline. Dense verdant jungle covers the rugged mountains where graceful waterfalls plunge filigree-like into deep pools.

The tidy villages are the epitome of community pride, clean and well tended with every spare space decorated with shells, pebbles and flowers. Here, old traditions are greatly respected and the islands have a delightful relaxed old world feeling.

Trip Outline

Flying into Apia we spend time on both main islands, ’Upolo and Savai’i as well as on two smaller islands; the very traditional Manono Island where there are no roads, no vehicles and no dogs and Namu’a Island in an area renowned for its sea turtles and bird life.

  • Apia - general sightseeing in Apia town, the beautifully restored Robert Louis Stevenson Homestead and the rainforest walk to his viewpoint Tomb.
  • South Coast of 'Upolo , stay at a delightful beach ale, enjoy some fantastic beach walking.
  • Namu’a Island, a tropical island paradise – beach and island walks, outrigger canoe fishing, visit Fanuatapu island and go turtle watching. Excellent snorkeling and swimming in the lagoon. A beautiful place to relax and enjoy.
  • Outrigger canoeing in the Mangrove Conservation Area and on Namu'a Island.
  • Explore the fascinating lava landscapes of Savai’i, massive lava-tube caves, a buried church
  • Sunday - attending the local church is highly recommended, the singing is incredibly beautiful, a traditional umu feast.
  • Visit the Turtle Conservation Pools, the Canopy Tree Walkway, the impressive Alofaaga blowholes and the Pulemelei Mound - the largest ancient structure in Polynesia.
  • Swim in the crystal clear pool at the base of Afu Aau Waterfall and climb through wonderful rainforest to the rim of the Tafua Savai’i Crater.
  • A Farewell Feast and Fia Fia Dance night.
  • Learn about the local customs, cooking, weaving, music and the art of tapa making.
  • Manono Island - no roads, no vehicles and no dogs, a very traditional way of life.
  • Beach walks along the delightful coastline will feature.

Of course, we’ve popped in a three night stays at idyllic Manase to allow ample time for just relaxing and enjoying the ambience and beauty of Samoa and its people.

Accommodation

Samoa has its own unique style of beach accommodation, simple thatched fales at the water’s edge, no keys to worry about because there’s generally no door, just a palm leafed curtain. It’s absolutely magic to wake up to the sound of the waves lapping the shore and to step right out onto the sand or at some places slip straight into the water for a swim. This is travel island style!

For the remaining 2 or 3 nights we will use more conventional styled hotel rooms. For all accommodations twin share is the norm.
