The Amazon Experience

Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve

"A world of trees, flowers, vines, butterflies, birds and Amazon tribes".....Jungle walking, canoe rides at sunset, visit an Indian village, bird watching, fishing trip etc.

Fly to Lima for a two-night stay before taking a very early morning flight to Iquitos in the Amazon Basin (1.5hrs). From here travel by road 1.5 hrs to the boat station at Nata, to begin your Amazonian experience. You then travel up river to your jungle retreat, the Pacaya-Samiria Amazon Lodge.

Stay at the lodge for 5 days/4 nights and take part in an informative programme of jungle experiences including one night camping at a remote location. With experts on Amazonian flora and fauna as your guides, enjoy jungle walking, canoe rides, visits to Indian villages, bird watching, piranha fishing, swimming etc. The Amazonian Rainforest is not a zoo, sightings can not be guaranteed, but this is a rich pristine area so you should have many opportunities to see macaws, parrots, toucans, the pink and gray fresh water dolphins and a host of other land, air and aquatic species as well as an immense variety of fascinating plants, trees and fauna.

Leaving the Lodge, visit the Amazonian town of Iquitos before flying back to Lima where you will join the main group of Peru travellers.

Draft Itinerary Outline

Day 1. Lima - arrive
Day 2. Lima - sightseeing
Day 3. Pacaya- Samira Lodge - early morning flight, transfer to Lodge
Day 4. Pacaya- Samira Lodge - jungle activities, walks, canoes, motorboats, fishing, school /village visit
Day 5. Pacaya- Samira Lodge - jungle activities, overnight camping (weather permitting)
Day 6. Pacaya- Samira Lodge - jungle activities
Day 7. Lima - after breakfast return to Iquitos, sightseeing day before flying to Lima - meet up with the PB 81 Peru group

Climate

The climate in the Reserve is tropical, warm and humid with minimum temperatures of 72º F (22º C). Generally, dawns and nights in the jungle tend to be fresh. It can rain on any day of the year.

The Lodge

Surrounded by abundant rainforest, Pacaya Samiria Amazon Lodge offers comfortable bungalows, each of them with two single beds. Every bungalow has a private terrace with view to the Marañón River, ensuite bathrooms with tiled walls and access to the main garden. Windows and doors have mosquito nettings.

Connecting elevated walkways lead to our club-house, dining room, hammock room, watch-towers and hiking paths. The House Club with bar and dining room, offers guests delicious regional food and a range of beverages. There are both indoor and outdoor hammock areas offer stunning panoramic views of the Marañón River and the surrounding forest.

Activities include visits to the local communities, hikes in primary rainforest, flora and fauna observation, birdwatching, canoe rides, piranha fishing, excursions during the day and at night.

In the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve visitors will also have the chance to observe the Amazon's exotic pink dolphin in its native waterways. On top of all of this, the bird-watching programs have been designed for you to experience the beauty and diversity of the Amazon in its natural habitat.

Special Note

The Amazon Experience is structured as an extension to our Peru/Bolivia trip PB 111. It departs Auckland 7 June, 7 days ahead of the Peru group. However, independent travellers who wish to join in Lima are welcome to do so, starting Lima the evening of 7 June and concluding on your return to Lima the afternoon of 13 June.
