Antarctic Adventure Cruise – The cruise leaves from Ushuaia on the island of Tierra del Fuego at the very tip of South America. Sailing down the historic Beagle Channel to head south across that infamous stretch of water known as the Drake Passage. On reaching the South Shetland Islands make your way along the Antarctic Peninsular to just short of the Antarctic Circle. This part of the trip is an 11 night / 12 day cruise package on an ice-strengthened vessel, accommodating 48 passengers and an expedition staff of international specialists - biologist, historian, geologist and kayak master. The cabins are surprisingly spacious, the food and service are outstanding.
- Daily Activities - the two days it takes to cross the Drake are filled with lectures and films on a variety of relevant topics and on reaching the calmer waters of the Peninsular a daily routine of land and water based activities begins. Shore landings take place atleast twice a day to visit wildlife site, research stations and historic sites. Hike to spectacular view points, “bum-slide” down ice-slopes and entertain yourself for hours taking photos of the wildlife and stunning scenery. A highlight are the zodiac cruises for close up viewing of the icebergs and dramatic glacier faces and to observe the wildlife; the birds, seals and whales for whom this white frozen world is home.
- Camping on the ice - putting up your tent on the ice, taking photos after midnight, the sun never setting. An experience not to be missed. There is only limited space available per cruise (20) so this activity needs to be booked when you register, no extra charge. Sleeping bags, tents and sleeping mats provided.
- Sea kayaking – (opt.) paddling through the brash ice, close encounters with seals, penguins and whales; gliding between icebergs; the stillness, the silence and the glassy reflections momentarily broken by the dip of the paddles. What a magical experience! Some previous kayaking experience is required. Participation needs to be booked at registration as there are only 10 kayaking places available per trip. Essential safety clothing of dry suits, booties and life jacket provided. There is an additional charge of $1,040.
Land sector highlights include,
- Iguazu Falls - possibly the most beautiful falls in the world. Walk the extensive trails that connect the various view points within in the park and enjoy the exciting boat ride to the base of the falls. Be prepared to get very wet!
- Perito Moreno Glacier - a massive wall of blue and white ice 4 km's wide, 60 to 90 meters high, collapsing and exploding into the channel below, an awesome sight!
- Torres del Paine NP – the Torres, spectacular granite pillars that rise 2,000 meters above the Patagonian steppe land. This park has abundant wildlife - guanacos, rheas, foxes and condors and some great walks. The featured walk is a 7-9 hour hike to the base of the Torres, a magnificent day walk. Shorter alternatives are available.
- Los Claciares National Park - remote and wild, great hiking in the vicinity of Mt Fitzroy.
- Ushuaia – Ushuaia has a stunning location, nestled on the shore of the Beagle Channel and back dropped by a pristine mountain wilderness. Visit the national park and ride the chairlift to go hiking in the mountains behind the town. The views are stunning.
- Buenos Aires - home of the tango, this elegant city is often referred to as the “ Paris of the Americas” . Attend a Tango dinner show and visit the Plata delta region, near Tigre.
